Why Employee Engagement matters to us
We spend a lot of our time at work, so it's important to us that people feel comfortable, supported and enjoy being part of the team.
Creating opportunities to connect, get to know each other and spend time together is one of the ways we try to make that happen.
More than just events
For us, the activities themselves aren't the most important part. It's what happens because of them.
A conversation between colleagues who'd never met before. A new starter feeling part of the team. Someone discovering a shared hobby with a colleague from another project.
Over the past year, we've organised a range of activities to help bring people together, support wellbeing and give back to our community. Here are a few of our favourites:
- LEGO Challenge was a fun team challenge where colleagues worked together to create a robot or animal mashup, encouraging collaboration and a bit of friendly competition.
- Football Tournament was an opportunity for colleagues from different teams to get together, stay active and enjoy some healthy competition outside of work.
- Board Games Afternoon brought together colleagues from across the company to enjoy classic board games, have a chat and have a good time together.
- Paint Session was a creative activity where colleagues explored their artistic side, tried something new, and connected in a fun, relaxed environment.
- As part of the Tidy Town Initiative, our colleagues joined together to help make our local community cleaner and at the same time had the opportunity to spend some time outdoors as a team.
- Our step challenge brought colleagues together to raise money for a local LGBTQ+ community organisation, encouraging everyone to stay active while supporting a meaningful cause.
Each activity is different, but they all have the same goal: bringing people together and creating a workplace where people feel connected, supported and part of the Zinkworks community.
Celebrating our differences
Bringing people together also means celebrating what makes each of us different.
With more than 20 nationalities across the company, our people bring a wide range of cultures, experiences and perspectives.
This year, we organised our first Cultural Diversity Event to celebrate the many cultures that make up Zinkworks. Colleagues from different countries shared a little piece of where they're from by giving short presentations about their home countries, talking about local traditions and bringing in some of their favourite homemade food for everyone to try.
The office was filled with flavours from around the world, from Spanish omelette and Indian and Sri Lankan dishes to Brazilian desserts, Irish soda bread, Scottish cake, and Polish and Romanian sweets. We also held a fun cultural quiz, giving everyone the chance to learn something new while getting to know their colleagues better.
It was a great opportunity to celebrate our different backgrounds, spark new conversations and strengthen the sense of community across the company.
For us, creating an inclusive workplace isn't just about welcoming people. It's about making sure everyone feels they belong.
Looking after wellbeing
Feeling connected also means feeling supported.
That's why creating a positive workplace goes beyond social activities. We also want our people to know that their wellbeing matters.
Mental health affects everyone differently, and we believe it's important to encourage people to look after themselves, not only when things get difficult, but every day.
Whether that's through sharing wellbeing resources, encouraging healthy habits or simply reminding people to take a break when they need one, we want wellbeing to be part of our culture, not something we only talk about once a year.
Living our values
Everything we do is guided by the values that shape Zinkworks: teamwork, community, learning and professionalism.
The activities we organise are just one expression of those values. They're not the goal, but a reflection of the kind of workplace we want to build and the experience we want people to have every day.
What we're
building at Zinkworks goes beyond the work we do. We're building a community
where people can grow, feel supported and be at their best.
